ROYAL COMMISSION ON CANADA'S ECONOMIC PROSPECTS
Chaired by Walter Gordon, the 1956 Report displays a new period of concern for Canadian nationalism. Gordon warned of the dangers of economic subordination to the United States and recommended some measures to reduce this danger. The Liberal government of Pierre Trudeau returned to this concern in the early 1970's and brought in legislation protective of national interests. Many argue, however, that the Free Trade Agreement of 1989, implemented by a Conservative government, was a victory for continentalism and accelerated the process of integrating the Canadian and American economies.
